USA versus England

The day started beautifully. I had an amazing writing masterclass – they’re doing another one in October, for those who are interested – and then I headed to the pub for the England versus USA game. I was ready to show my American patriotism. Then, it all went wrong.

I wrote about it on my bi-weekly column for AND MAGAZINE. Click below to read all about it.

This was an awesome article! I only ever knew the first verse. Haha, I had no idea the national anthem was longer than that! Go figure.

    Btw…Tag! You're it! ;)

LOL As I read this article, I started trying to remember the words to the “Start Spangled Banner” myself and wasn't able to either….and I live in the hometown of it's writer, Francis Scott Key! He's buried not but a mile from my house! Sad, I tell ya.

I was living in Germany when the last World Cup was there. Talk about “awesome”. I am so jealous you are in a football loving country where they realize the magnitude of the World Cup. Here it's just an after thought.

And who knew that there were four verses! Outrageous!

Hopefully the US will catch up.

Great to hear about your experience with the World Cup on AND. Mine was opposite, in that my husband was the only Brit is a room full of chilli-eating Americans. Everyone was in agreement that England gifted us the goal, but were very grateful. :) My favorite comment was about England's national anthem: “It doesn't even mention the Queen in the lyrics.” No, because we hijacked it and made it “My Country Tis of Thee.” Love it.

Anyway, World Cup time is thing I'd rather be in England for. Just not the same fever pitch over here. :)

The mention of chilli's made my mouth water, FYI.
I honestly never knew that we stole their national anthem until it came on and I started singing our version. I was like, “what are they singing?” Surely they know they've got the words wrong? Who knew!
